Position Description
The Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced education and training in the primary care of adult and pediatric populations. The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing holistic primary care to Emergency Services' patients under the medical supervision of the Emergency Services Medical Director and Collaborative Practice Agreement Sponsor(s). This position involves ongoing collaboration with Emergency Services physicians. This position is responsible and accountable for providing quality care to patients by utilizing the nursing process as defined for Nurse Practitioners in the Missouri Nurse Practice Act.

Service to Department and Administration: - Has an understanding of the job, a commitment to its fulfillment and the interpersonal skills necessary to guide, motivate, reassure and persuade the various users and providers of Emergency Services - Convenient Care. Within the department, creates a positive environment in which a "can do" attitude prevails. Cooperates with hospital administrative representatives to address Medical Center operational and fiscal needs, and to reconcile any differences related to the needs of Emergency Services - Convenient Care. Involved in preparing Emergency Services - Convenient Care for accreditation/certification in TJC, State and other accreditation agencies.

Service to Medical Staff: - Responsible for the effective practice of non-emergent care according to the Medical Staff By-Laws and established Emergency Services and Medical Center Policies and Procedures. Achieves an effective working relationship with the Medical Center's medical staff to ensure success of Emergency Services - Convenient Care through timely responsiveness to needs of medical staff. Organized and prepared when seeking physician input. Participates on Medical Center committees as needed.

Service to Patients and Their Families. - Ensures the provision of high quality medical care to patients and families through monitoring, promptness of care, facilitating timely management of patients, process for dealing with patients with non-emergency conditions, courteous and caring attitude, providing patient and caretaker education about caring for oneself at home or obtaining followup medical care, explains tests, providing input to patient complaints, and consulting with the practicing Emergency Services physician on duty, when appropriate, for all Emergency Services - Convenient Care patients at the Medical Center. Completes all chart documentation requirements for patients within required timeframe. Strives to improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of care provided. Respects patient and co-worker privacy and confidentiality. Addresses patients and their families appropriately, greets them with a smile, and demonstrates an overall positive and caring attitude.

Standards of Care: - Ensures that care is provided to the desired standard which includes but is not limited to high quality medical care, patient satisfaction through competency, timeliness and courtesy, and improvement of service through continuing education requirements necessary for licensure. Participates with management and clinicians to develop and support implementation of care paths, collection of clinical and financial data, most effective use of clinical information systems, compilation of utilization and quality assessment data designed to measure the appropriateness and quality of care provided, and the development, implementation and analysis of patient and referring physician satisfaction surveys related to Emergency Services - Convenient Care.

Knowledge of Age-Specific Factors: - Evaluates for age-appropriate motor skills and psychological norms. Recognizes patient's psychological development. Interview/communication techniques are appropriate. Assesses safety needs based on age groups and provides safety measures based on assessment. Uses appropriate size equipment for size and age of patient. Identifies increased physical/emotional dependency needs and evaluates availability of support systems.

Continuing Education: - Cooperates with the development of in-service education programs designed to meet the educational needs of physician and non-physician personnel. Seeks learning experiences/responsibilities to strengthen areas requiring development and to advance knowledge about other current developments in nursing.

Safe Working Environment: - Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures, drills, evacuation procedures, including OSHA exposure control plan, through appropriate responses to emergency situations/drills and safe working habits.
