Position Description

The Patient Care Technician is responsible for observing the patient and assisting in providing a safe environment for the patient. The Patient Care Technician is responsible to the Charge Nurse.

Activities of Daily Living - ●Assists the patient with Activities of Daily Living: (as directed by the patient’s nurse) with meal tray set-up and/or feeding, bathing, oral care, toileting, maintain continence, transfer to bed/chair, change bed linens and ambulate. ●If applicable, assist the patient turning every two hours.

Beds/Specialty Beds Operation/Alarms - ●Knowledge of operation of patient call light system. ●Operates beds appropriately and safely to include: side rails; HOB and FOB; lock-out controls; CPR release; degree of elevation and measurement of HOB. ●Demonstrates safe use of the different types of beds. ●Demonstrates ability to set bed and chair alarms.

Armbands - ●Recognizes the color of and verbiage on all armbands and is knowledgeable of the rationale for application of each, to include: Patient Identification, Prone to Fall, Allergy, Do Not Resuscitate.

Equipment Systems Use - ●Uses the telephone and beeper system appropriately. ●Demonstrates ability to use Outlook to send and receive e-mails. ●Demonstrates ability to navigate the Saint Francis Medical Center Intranet System to locate policies and procedures.

Isolation - ●Maintains ability to distinguish between the types of isolations. ●Recognizes the precautions that need to be adhered to with each type of isolation and the appropriate personal protection equipment to be worn when caring for the patient in isolation.

Safety - ●Correctly uses two patient identifiers when providing patient care. ●Follows universal precautions. ●Provides diversional activities. ●Maintains safe patient environment. ●Maintains fall precautions. ●Uses proper body mechanics when assisting with lifting and patient transfers. ●Understands and verbalizes the need to observe the patient at all times. ●Provides patient privacy / modesty while providing patient care, while maintaining patient safety. ●Performs good hand washing when providing patient care. ●Accompanies patient that leaves the area for procedures/tests. ●May be required to take action to prevent a patient from harming themselves. ●May be required to take care of a patient who is restrained or suicidal.

Communication - ● Demonstrates the ability to receive report to guide the care and safety of the patient. ●Recognizes when to contact or what to report to the patient’s nurse. ●Provides accurate and appropriate shift report to oncoming Patient Safety Attendant and to patient's nurse/charge nurse.

Must have completed the probationary period. Knowledge of the general function of the medical center as a non-clinical employee and must have completed the training program as a sitter.
