Position Description

Responsible for procurement and processing of specimens submitted for diagnostic testing. Performs a variety of clerical and billing functions.

Performs specimen collection using a variety of techniques - Performs specimen collection using a variety of techniques. a. Patient samples are collected with minimal discomfort to the patient. b. Patient samples are collected in a timely, productive manner. c. Standard Precaution procedures are strictly followed at all times. d. Patient identification is verified in accordance with Medical Center Policy.

Patient registration, order entry, and timing - Patient registration, order entry, and timing in of specimens is performed accurately in accordance with Medical Center Policy. a. Laboratory test requests are entered accurately on each patient. b. Requests are entered according to priority. c. Competence is maintained and new skills added as needed. d. Information related to samples/tubes drawn, name, date of birth, account number, collection date and times is documented correctly and in accordance with departmental policy.

Processes Laboratory specimens - Processes Laboratory specimens. a. Specimens are evaluated for adherence to labeling criteria. b. Problem resolution of specimens not meeting acceptance criteria is initiated in a timely manner. c. Specimens including mailouts, are processed according to test requirements using appropriate safety guidelines and stored at correct temperature after processing. d. Specimens are distributed to testing sites in a timely manner. e. Specimens are processed without labeling errors occurring. f. Specimen pending reports are monitored and action is taken in a timely manner. g. Requests for add-on testing are completed in a timely manner. h. Mailout specimens are handled to facilitate optimal turnaround times.

Orders and maintains inventory - Orders and maintains inventory; stocks work areas with daily supplies. a. Inventory is monitored and supplies are maintained at par levels for all storage and workbench areas. b. Client inventory is monitored and supplies are delivered on a timely basis c. All required documentation is recorded correctly in a timely manner. d. Shortages are reported to supervisor immediately.

Communicates with physician and patients - Communicates with physician and patients with a high degree of professionalism and cooperation. Serves as a resource to customers regarding test requirements, etc. a. Phone calls are answered in a timely manner. Calls for specimen pickup and distribution of lab supplies are communicated to the appropriate courier in an accurate and timely manner b. Patient identifiers are obtained prior to release of laboratory results, in accordance with departmental policy. c. Results are communicated accurately. d. Excellent customer service skills are consistently demonstrated. e. Information regarding critical laboratory results is communicated in accordance to departmental policy to outpatient/outreach areas and documented appropriately. f. Providers are informed in a timely manner when laboratory testing cannot be performed or when changes in business hours are anticipated. g. Testing requests are cancelled when appropriate and in accordance with departmental policy. h. Information related to problems and their resolution is consistently documented.

Completes tasks within established time frames. c. Prioritizes, reorganizes workload, and responds to STAT and heavy workload situations. d. Position Requirements

Degree/Diploma: High School Diploma; prefer a Phlebotomy certificate or on the job experience, but not required.

Certification/License Title: CPR Certification
