Position Description

The Oncology Triage Nurse manages the triage phone line usually during normal hours based on algorithms to ensure standardized, timely support. When needed, confers with a Medical Oncologist. Ensures timely access to information and care for cancer and hematology patients. Serves as an essential liasion between patient and provider in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. This remote symptom management should reduce unnecessary ED and physician visits and improve the continum of oncology care.

Triage - Manages the triage phone line usually during normal business hours based on American Society of Clinical Oncology, Oncology Nursing Society algorithms to ensure standardized, timely support in managing chemo therapy side affects. Reduce unnecessary ED or Hospital readmissions by acting as a resources to the patient and a liaison between patient and physician.

Barriers - Identify barriers to treatment and individualize treatment plans to meet the patient goals and communicate specific needs/problems to appropriate health care provider.

Intake - Assesses the intake of information for triage and disposition of new and established cancer patients issues and concerns in a complex, multi-disciplinary clinic setting by evaluating and addressing patients needs.

Interaction - Interacts with referring physicians, patients, and family members obtaining appropriate condition, medical concern or side affect, acquiring medical records and diagnostics, evaluating the situation and if necessary then scheduling an appointment with their attending physician.

Position Requirements

Educational Requirements: Graduate of an accredited professional  nursing program. Licensed to practice in the State of Missouri.  Obtain OCN certification within two years of hiring, full time or part time position.

Certification/License Title: CPR and ACLS

Additional Skills & Experience Requirements: Minimum three years experience in an acute care setting. Preferably in an oncology healthcare setting.
