Position Description

Typical hours for this position:  Part-Time Position, Mon - Fri, will work four (4) days, 4:00 AM - 8:00 AM, will work every other weekend 4:00 AM - 12:30 PM, hours may vary, must have a flexible schedule.

Under the direction of the Lab Manager, the Phlebotomist is responsible for performing specimen collection from patients for diagnostic testing purposes.

Specimen Procurement/Delivery Time - •Consistently draws specimens accurately with minimal discomfort to the patient. •Supervisor receives no more than two valid complaints within evaluation year regarding the manner in which blood was drawn. •Routine blood procurement is normally accomplished in 6 to 9 minutes (exceptions to difficult cases). •Consistently delivers STATS within 5 minutes of time of collection and routines within 15 minutes (excludes AM pickup 4-7 AM).

Identification of Patient - •Always verifies patient is correct. •Labels test tubes immediately following procedure with patient's name, room number, account number, date, time and initials. Standard is 100% and will be rated accordingly.

Ability to Reorganize Workload to Maintain Maximum Efficiency - •Consistently uses time between tests productively filling in with office work, assisting technologist, assisting on unit or performing other duties as requested or directed. •Regularly completes all procedures scheduled during shift without sacrificing quality. Rarely requires assistance. •Is able to prioritize / reorganize workload in response to STAT requests in accordance with established guidelines.

Procurement of Specimens (Knowledge) - •Employee consistently demonstrates knowledge of phlebotomy and processing procedures. •Requests additional information when unsure.

Implements Safe and Appropriate Practice - •Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures, drills, evacuation procedures including chemical hygiene plan / OSHA exposure control plan through appropriate responses to emergency situations / drills and safe working habits. •Obeys all safety rules, including wearing gloves at all times. Follows standard precautions at all times. •Is knowledgeable of appropriate stages of age, growth and development.

Assists With the Orientation and Skill Development of New Staff Members - •Trains new employees, as directed. •Reviews all procedures and policies with new employees.

Position Requirements

Degree/Diploma:
High School Diploma or GED

Certification/License Title: 
Current BLS CPR certification required.

Skills & Experience Requirements:
Phlebotomy experience preferred, but not required.
