Position Description

Directs and coordinates the technical operation of the Blood Bank section of the laboratory. Provides staff training, completes personnel schedules, performs diagnostic testing as needed, evaluates competency of all personnel, provides input for performance evaluations and assists with budget preparation.

Performs laboratory procedures and provides oversight for the Blood Bank section. - a. Patient test procedures and internal and external Quality Controls are performed effectively and reported with error rate consistent with laboratory standards. b. Procedures are completed and associated documentation is carried out per established laboratory policies. c. Clinical correlation of results with other known patient parameters is incorporated in result verification per department procedure. d. Workload is prioritized and managed to meet established goals. e. Procedures/policies for shift transition are in place and reviewed and completion of pending test logs is consistently reviewed. f. Staff orientation, training and competency records are complete and up-to-date.

Maintains appropriate inventories and effectively manages use of supplies and reagents. - a. An effective supply inventory is maintained and regular checks documented. b. Emergency orders are rarely required. c. Staff is trained to minimize waste and ensure appropriate use of supplies. d. Assists in maintaining operating budget within guidelines. e. Assists in budget preparation and in investigating budget variances.

Ensures appropriate instrument/equipment performance and maintenance. - a. Required equipment maintenance is performed and documented. b. Repairs are scheduled quickly and with minimal disruption to the delivery of laboratory services. c. Front line staff is trained and mentored to perform basic troubleshooting. d. Current protocols and written procedures for all test methods and instrument operation are maintained and up-to-date. e. Product/method/new test development is coordinated and implemented as needed. f. Preventative maintenance documentation is provided to Bio-med for instruments that are under service contract.

Maintains a positive and professional work environment. - a. Regular positive recognition is provided to staff and peers. b. Effective communication of news and developments is carried out to staff. c. Attendance and active participation in meetings and planning sessions is achieved.

Investigates documents and resolves problems and complaints. - a. Problems are investigated thoroughly and in a timely manner. b. Effective and positive systems improvements are provided as part of problem resolution. c. Potential improvements are regularly identified before problems arise. d. Continuous quality improvement is strived for in day-to-day activities.

Oversees staff technical and professional performance. - a. Participation in front-line staff evaluations is provided to area leadership. b. Technical issues involving quality and competency are discussed with employees in a timely manner. c. Employee technical problems are documented and improvement plans are developed with lab leadership. d. Positive feedback is given to staff who demonstrates technical excellence and professional commitment. e. Issues with staff work time and attendance are communicated to lab leadership as necessary. f. Staff is scheduled to ensure appropriate coverage.

Ensures all policies, procedures and manuals are current and accurate. Provides leadership to meet compliance requirements with all pertinent federal, state and accreditation standards. - a. Changes to policies and procedures are developed to meet regulatory standards b. Annual review is performed and director/designee signatures are obtained for all policies and procedures in specified area. c. Delivery of defined laboratory services is carried out and managed within all applicable accreditation and regulatory guidelines. Inspections are completed without serious deficiencies.

Position Requirements

Additional Educational Requirements:
Bachelors of Science degree. Individuals meeting general supervisor qualifications on or before February 28, 1992 are grandfathered in according to CLIA. The qualifications are: meets the technologist qualifications for high complexity tests prior to February 28, 1992 by achieving a satisfactory grade in a proficiency examination approved by HHS and has at least 6 years of pertinent full-time laboratory experience of which at least 2 years have been spent working in blood bank.

Additional Certification/Licensure Requirements:
Certification required as an MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP) or CLS(NCA).

Additional Skills & Experience Requirements:
Minimum of four years of blood bank experience.
