The Epic Principal Trainer, in conjunction with the Training Coordinator, is responsible for the instructional design of the Epic training curriculum for his/her assigned clinical application(s). In addition, the Principal Trainer builds, tests, and maintains the Epic training environment; assists in developing and maintaining training policies & procedures; and following the initial Epic implementation, provides classroom, skills labs, and one-on-one core orientation to staff for the assigned application(s). The Principal Trainer supports ongoing Training and Development initiatives and may serve as an education resource on committees and ad hoc work groups.
The Epic Principal Trainer is expected to attend Epic training and achieve certification for his/her assigned Epic application(s). In the event additional credentialed trainers are necesary to meet internal training demands, the Epic Principal Trainer may be responsible for the credentialing training program as well as oversight of these additional training resources.
Other Skills and/or Knowledge Required: Knowledge of clinical and operational workflows relevant to assigned Epic application(s). Foundational knowledge in adult learning and curriculum development. Some level of knowledge in the use of computer applications that support daily healthcare operations.
Application and Workflow Expertise - Application and Workflow Expertise: Possesses an excellent working knowledge of administrator-level functions for assigned application(s). Knowledge of the workflows for the areas assigned. May be called upon to analyze existing daily operations as they relate to training decisions. Understands the choices involved in application configuration, and builds/configures the system according to agreed upon end user needs. Works according to assigned portions of the project plan to complete build and configuration tasks within defined timeframes for the training environment.
2. Training Program Development and Maintenance - 2. Training Program Development and Maintenance: Designs specific training materials for assigned application(s) to include: guides, workbooks, checklists, and other support materials for designated area(s). Consistently plans and implements training activities to meet identified learning needs. Demonstrates organization and time management in planning and executing programs or classes. Participates in the development and presentation of demos for appropriate meetings. Designs credentialing training material as assigned. Researches and stays current with best practices for adult learning theory while designing materials. Stays abreast of changes in assigned Epic application(s) and updates training materials as necessary. May be asked to pursue certification in multiple Epic applications as the need arises.
Maintenance of Epic Training Environment - Maintenance of Epic Training Environment: Maintains ongoing contact with Application Coordinators to ensure assigned application(s) are functioning optimally within the training environment. Troubleshoots software problems within the training environment as appropriate and seeks Epic support as needed via direct contact or through submission of issue tickets. Responsible for performing functions in the training environment that may include, but are not limited to: creating and configuring new end user accounts, building and revising chart templates, configuring end user functions for various security levels, managing software change requests, assisting other trainers and clinical leaders in understanding new end user functionality contained within system releases, and coordinating any scheduled maintenance or setup requirements to support the training curriculum within the training environment.
Onboarding and Ongoing Education - Onboarding and Ongoing Education: Assists in planning, scheduling and facilitating new employee onboarding for assigned application(s). Evaluates programming materials and makes necessary changes based on software upgrades and input from the Training Coordinator and/or appropriate Application Coordinator(s). Assists the Training Coordinator in completing a formal annual review of all training materials to evaluate the quality of content and consistency of training materials across all Epic modules.
Committee Involvement - Committee Involvement: Participates on committees and ad hoc work groups, as requested, to provide input on the development of training materials and educational activities for various organizational initiatives that involve assigned Epic application(s).
Credentialed Training Program - Credentialed Training Program: Trains and credentials additional classroom trainers, as needed, to assist with end-user training of assigned clinical application(s).
