Position Description

Provides continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients under the direction of the Patient Care Manager, Director and Vice President of Patient Care. This role's primary responsibility is to verbally redirect the patient from engaging in at risk behaviors. Summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance. Knowledgeable and supportive of patient and institutional confidentiality and related medical center policies.

Implementation of Safe and Appropriate Care: - Implementation of Safe and Appropriate Care: Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes, follows safety rules, works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors and practices in organizational and department safety programs. Accurately completes responsibilities as defined by role and directed by primary nurse. Prioritizes problems for immediate attention. Collaborates with other members of the health care team as needed. Provides for a clean environment and work area.

Documentation / Performance Development: - Documentation / Performance Development: Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the AvaSys TeleSitter Solution software and epilepsy monitoring system. Maintains visual observation at all times. Verbally redirects patient over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room. Immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance. Provides continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients. Notifies nurse of any abnormal behaviors or behaviors indicative of seizure activity. Adheres to first line of action is to verbally redirect the patient from engaging in at risk behaviors. Summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance by communication device or STAT Alert Alarm, if appropriate. Knowledgeable and supportive of patient and institutional confidentiality and related hospital policies. Participates in hand-off of pertinent information / behavior about assigned patients when arriving on unit and upon completion of shift assignment. Arranges meal break times with nurse and informs nurse prior to leaving monitoring station for any reason so that relief maybe provided to ensure constant patient observation. Seeks help or advice as soon as possible when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others. Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues. Assures patient environment safety. Seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to nurse. Maintains documentation binders. Documentation is accurate and thorough. Maintains the patient's medical record.

Evaluates Age Specific / Appropriate Motor Skills and Psychological Development. - Evaluates Age Specific / Appropriate Motor Skills and Psychological Development. Interview and communication techniques used are appropriate for age. Assesses safety needs based on age. Uses equipment based on age and size of patient. Identifies any unique physical and / or emotional needs and determines what other support systems are required for care. Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide the appropriate care to this patient population based on the patient's individualized treatment plan as delegated by the RN.

Organization Prioritization: - Organization Prioritization: Manages and prioritizes completion of job responsibilities within specific timeframe and / or assigned shift. Utilizes downtime to the benefit of the department. Responds promptly to patient needs. Requests nursing assistance when necessary. Knowledgeable about department and medical center quality initiatives. Serves as a preceptor for new staff. References and adheres to medical center policies and procedures.

Position Requirements

Educational Requirements: High school graduate or G.E.D. with general knowledge of hospital setting. Completion of medical center orientation.

Additional Skills & Experience Requirements: Previous experience in a hospital environment preferred. Previous clinical experience preferred. Previous direct patient care experience preferred. Nursing Assistant / Medical Assistant certification preferred. Knowledge of basic computer operation skills. Microsoft Windows experience. Ability to multitask and prioritize simultaneous situations. Capable of continuous monitoring of up to 15 patients on one screen at one time and remaining alert at all times while on duty. Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset. Ability to communicate with hospital staff and responds quickly to patient behavior changes. Ability to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors and staff.
