Position Description

Under the direction of a physician or advanced practice nurse, performs a variety of patient care activities and to assist in the day-to-day operations of the practice.

Other Skills and/or Knowledge Required: Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe working environment. Knowledge of medical terminology and examination, diagnostics and treatment room procedures, as well as nursing theory, principles, techniques and practice of professional nursing.

Provides and maintains optimal nursing care - Provides and maintains optimal nursing care through planning, organizing and directing the clinic nursing functions.

Accurately and promptly implements physician order - Accurately and promptly implements physician orders. Accurately prepares and administers medications per physician orders. Initiates physician orders in a timely manner. Correctly dresses wounds, performs suture removals, accu-checks, venipunctures, etc.

Patient Education and Instruction - Issues education material and assists with patient education and instruction. Ensures lab reports and other diagnostic results are in the patient record and conveys such items to the physician in a timely manner.

Patient Visits - Escorts patients to exam room, obtains vitals, patient reported pain scales, records current medications and assists in determining medical problems. Accurately performs diagnostic testing and procedures as ordered. Assists physician with other testing as required. Correctly prepares exam rooms and instruments for examination, testing and procedures per physician's specifications.

Communication - Communicates patients condition and progress, collaborating on the plan of care. Organized and prepared when seeking physician input via phone or in person, i.e. chart available, questions organized, etc. Seeks guidance and uses proper discretion when notifying physicians for patient condition change. Triages patients and phone messages.

Scheduling - Calls or electronically orders prescriptions to pharmacies, orders to the Medical Center, physician offices or home health agencies. Schedules patients for follow-up visits, procedures or diagnostics testing. Call patients back regarding lab/procedure results in a timely manner. Monitors physicians schedule regarding vacation, follow-up visits, coverage and appointments.

Position Requirements

Degree/Diploma:  High School Diploma or GED required

Additional Educational Requirements: Graduate from an accredited school of practical or vocational nursing program or completion of an approved Medial Assisatant program.

Certification/License Title:  Current license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Missouri or current certification or registry as a Medical Assistant by a nationally recognized credentialing organization.

Additional Certification/Licensure Requirements:  Current BLS CPR certification required.

Additional Skills & Experience Requirements: Skill in taking vital signs, history, attention to detail, patient education and instruction, and multi-tasking. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, physicians, staff and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standared and maintain calm and effective reactions during emergency situations. Ability to communicate clearly, as well as understanding and responding to detailed oral and written instructions. Assume responsibility for professional growth and development. Ability to learn and efficiency utilize diagnostic equipment, electronic systems for ordering, medical records and other common computer programs.
