Position Description

Assists the clinical nurse with the nursing care of the Same Day Service patient in both pre and post operative phases. Assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment in the Same Day Services department. Performs duties in accordance with departmental and hospital standards, policies and procedures. Works under the direction of the Peri-Anesthesia Manager and Peri-Anesthesia Assistant Manager.

Assists with implementation and evaluation of safe and appropriate patient care -  Assists the RN with care of the patient. Consults and works collaboratively with the nurse and other members of the health care team in the performance of the patient.  Takes care of the patient's needs and comfort, while maintaining patient privacy and dignity.  Recognizes and responds appropriately to unsafe situations and informs the nurse of any changes in condition or behavior of the patient.  Is reliable and dependable in following nursing directions.  Reports to the nurse unusual occurrences or reactions.

Performance of technical Skills -  Demonstrates proficiency in performing required technical skills (drawing blood, taking vital signs, obtaining height and weight, EKG's etc.  Adheres to the department policies, procedures and standards related to technical skills.

Communication with parents/families/significant others -  Develops a therapeutic relationship with patients/families/significant others through use of communication skills.  Supports patient emotionally pre and post operatively.  Responds appropriately to any questions from the patient/family/significant other.

Provides clean and safe environment -  Follows established safety procedures, i.e., side rails up, brakes locked, and transferring and discharging of patients, etc.  Provides a clean and safe environment. Helps with the checking, cleaning and maintenance of department equipment on a daily/weekly basis as appropriate, i.e., cleaning of patients carts, O2, one touch, refrigerator temperatures, etc.  Always uses two patient identifiers.

Accurate documentation and completion of assigned clerical and other duties -  Follows through with designated responsibilities in recording patient information in the chart/checklist.  Completes and accounts for patient charge sheets at the end of the day.  Accurately enters orders per department guidelines.  Will work on completing tasks that need to be performed, i.e., ordering and stocking of supplies, prepares for next day, etc.

Maintains flexibility in worked hours to meet the needs of the department -  Performs work assignments as assigned and works all shifts and areas without difficulty. Will adjust personal schedule if required in the event of departmental need.  Adjusts worked hours according to increased or decreased workload as directed.  When asked will help out in other areas.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills to perform safe and effective patient care and/or interaction with all age groups. - Recognizes patient's psychological development.  Interview/communication techniques are age appropriate. Assesses safety needs based on age groups and provides safety measures based on that assessment. Uses appropriate sized equipment for size and age of patient.

Certification/License Title: CPR Certification

Additional Skills & Experience Requirements: Minimum of one year experice working with patients. Willing to train in use of medical equipment and terminology.
