Position Description

The Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for the testing, inspection, and maintenance of all affiliated fire alarm systems and sequences as related to the fire alarm system. This includes all brands of fire alarm panels, components, controls, and associated devices controlled by the fire alarm system. Must have advanced knowledge of fire alarm system operating principles, blue print reading, and interpretation of NFPA 72 codes, local Fire Marshall (AHJ) mandates, and regulations pertaining to proper test, inspection, and maintenance practices relating to the fire alarm system. In addition to the fire alarm system, the Fire Alarm Technician will be responsible for the maintenance and scheduling of inspections of the fire sprinkler system.

Comprehends & Troubleshoots Intricate Fire Alarm Components - Comprehends and troubleshoots intricate fire alarm components as related to hospital and medical office building systems. Performs repairs, adjustments, and operational verifications of all controls of the fire alarm system to ensure facility fire alarm effectiveness and integrity. Must conduct evaluations and adjustments to all aspects of life safety sensors and controls.

Inspections - Performs the required fire alarm periodic inspections. Continually evaluates the overall effectiveness of the program and modifies as needed to ensure optimal tests. Must be able to demonstrate desired outcomes, and routinely and continually monitors and enhances operational characteristics.

Knowledge - Maintains a working knowledge of all fire alarm systems, device locations and related operational characteristics required in a healthcare environment. Knowledgeable in NFPA 72 and Joint Commission requirements. Must be cognizant and recognize the urgency of maintaining current technology and installation applications as related to the healthcare environment.

Ensures Continued Operations - Ensures continued operation of fire alarm systems and associated equipment. Must assist, as needed or requested, in the diagnosis of equipment failures and restoration. Must possess and utilize teaching techniques to elevate the overall knowledge of coworkers' understanding of fire alarm systems.

Operations & Data - Monitors operations data presented by reporting terminals, operation panels, and employees/staff regarding system operation and condition. Records data in log book or computer files and makes suitable operational changes as shown by this data and operation of all fire alarm systems in normal / emergency mode. Is alert to emergency operation needs and ready to react to these needs in such a manner that delivery of fire alarm operations services are always as near normal as possible.

Outside Fire Alarm Service Companies - Works with outside fire alarm service companies on existing systems and new installation contractors to ensure that fire alarm schemes/systems are maintained/installed to conform to standards set by the hospital and regulatory agencies. Understands and participates in review of new design and commissioning.

Degree/Diploma: High School Diploma

Additional Certification/Licensure Requirements: NICET 2 certification preferred

Additional Skills & Experience Requirements: Two years of experience in a fire alarm testing related job desirable, will consider extensive technical training in fire alarm systems
Five to six years of experience in a related job preferred, with at least two years of experience in a healthcare environment preferred
