Position Description

 

Typical hours for this position:   Full-Time Position for the summer then opportunites to join the Nurse Assistant Float Pool which is PRN and very flexible:  Mon - Fri, shifts will vary based on assigned preceptor and area assigned, may work every third weekend.  APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 22, 2019.

The Extern performs specific task related to patient care directed and supervised by a Registered Nurse, LPN, Nurse Manager and Clinical Instructor. The Extern will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient. The Extern will demonstrate understanding of the unique physical and psychological needs of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients and possess the ability to assess date reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information necessary to provide quality care under the direction of designated Nurse Preceptor. Utilization of Externs will not have an impact on staffing.

Participates in the Nursing Process (Assessment). - 1. Accurately collects admission data and records in appropriate time frame. 2. Reports pertinent observations to the RN. 3. Follows physician orders. Reviews care plan and follows nursing orders.

Utilizes the Nursing process (Implements Safe and Appropriate Care). - 1. Provides direct patient care within the interpreted guidelines of the Nurse Practice Act of Missouri and under the direction of an RN/LPN. 2. Participates in clarifying medical information to patient, family and staff. 3. Adhere to Medical Center policies and procedures during physician order processing and transcribing (under the direct supervision of the Nurse Preceptor and with the exclusion of confirmation of medications), obtaining peripheral intravenous access (under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse), and any other therapeutic modalities that the Nurse Extern has received specific training through and approved nursing program and/or the medical center. The Nurse Extern may not administer medication or intravenous fluids/medications.

Utilizes the Nursing Process (Documentation). - 1. Documents results of care and patient’s progress. 2. Documentation reflects implementation of nursing/physician orders and patient’s progress toward outcome. 3. Seeks consultation as needed from other healthcare providers. 4. Utilizes automated communication (POC CIS) to provide for quality, accuracy and efficiency in documentation.

Acknowledges the Physician’s Plan of Care and Practices in a Collaborative Relationship with the Physician. - 1. Consistently make rounds with physicians. 2. Communicates patient’s condition and progress, collaborating on the plan of care. 3. Organized and prepared when seeking physician’s input via phone or in person, i.e. chart available, questions organized, etc. (when speaking to a physician via telephone, must be with direct supervision of RN/LPN) 4. Seeks guidance and uses proper discretion when notifying physicians of patient condition change.

Time Management. - 1. Gives organized, concise shift reports per zone/area protocol. 2. Utilizes downtown for the promotion of patient and/or medical center goals. 3. Routinely accomplishes work within assigned shift. 4. Organizes and prioritizes care.

Demonstrates Knowledge for Age-specific Factors Necessary to Perform Safe and Effective Performance of Duties. - 1. Evaluates for age-appropriate motor skills and psychological norms. 2. Recognized patient’s’s psychological development. 3. Interview/communication techniques are appropriate. 4. Assesses safety needs based on age groups and provides safety measures based on assessment. 5. Uses appropriate sized equipment for size and age of patient. 6. Identifies increased physical/emotional dependency needs and evaluates availability of support system.

Position Requirements

 

Educational Requirements: Currently enrolled in a BSN or ADN program and scheduled to graduate the following year. Will have a satisfactory academic record.

 

Certifications/Licenses:  Current BLS, CPR certification required.

Additional Skills & Experience Requirements: Must have completed 2 semesters or 3 quarters of clinical nursing experience prior to the start of the summer program.  #LI-NH1
