Position Description

Under the direction of the Clinical Nurse I-IV, Department Director, Patient Care Manager, Shift Administrator and Vice President of Patient Care, the Nurse Assistant performs specific tasks related to patient care as delegated by the Registered Professional Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. Will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient. Demonstrates understanding of the unique physical and psychological needs of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information necessary to provide quality care.

Implementation of Safe and Appropriate Care - ●Accurately completes responsibilities as defined by role and directed by primary nurse. ●Prioritizes problems for immediate attention. ●Collaborates with other members of the health care team, as needed, to provide care. ●Provides direct patient care within practice guidelines as outlined in job description. ●References and adheres to medical center policies and procedures during care delivery. ●Consistently demonstrates appropriate selection and use of safety equipment and assistive devices as appropriate for patient and staff safety. ●Provides clean patient environment and work area. ●Report/hand offs are conducted every shift change at the bedside, using SBAR. ●Participates in maintaining preventive measures (i.e., turning schedule, SCDs, oral care, etc.) as appropriate for the patient. ●Demonstrates proper body mechanics and techniques for patient transfers.

Documentation - ●Complete/accurate documentation of patient care, vital signs, and communication with nursing. ●Routinely utilizes and maintains care organizer for coordination of patient care.

Organization/Prioritization - ●Manages and prioritizes completion of job responsibilities within specific timeframe and / or assigned shift. ●Utilizes downtime to the benefit of the patient / department. ●Responds promptly to patient needs. Requests nursing assistance when necessary.

Demonstrates Knowledge of Age Specific Factors Necessary to Perform Safe and Effective Duties - ●Evaluates age specific/appropriate motor skills and psychological development. ●Interview and communication techniques used are appropriate for age. ●Assesses safety needs based on age. Plan of care is based on assessment. ●Uses equipment based on age and size of patient. ●Identifies any unique physical and/or emotional needs and determines what other support systems are required for care.

Performance Development - ●Knowledgeable about department and medical center quality initiatives. Practice is based on understanding initiatives/processes related to reaching benchmarks. ●Serves as a preceptor for new staff.

Position Requirements

Degree/Diploma: High School Diploma

Additional Educational Requirements: High school graduate or equivalent. Successful and proof of completion of an unlicensed assistive personnel curriculum that meats the minimum training standards as outlined in 19 CSR 30-20.125; or who has documented experience as a Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician or Surgical Technician in the past three (3) years; or who has completed LPN program outside the US and is awaiting the licensure examination, or the nursing student who has completed fundamentals or equivalent course.

Certification/License Title: CPR Certification

Additional Skills & Experience Requirements: Previous hospital or nursing home experience preferred. Previous computer experience preferred.
