Position Summary

The Manager, Investment Costs and Reporting is responsible for consolidating third-party investment costs of AIMCo in accordance with Public Sector Accounting Standards which is pivotal for AIMCo’s Financial Statements. As a key subject matter expert on AIMCo’s Investment Management Cost Policy and investment pools, the manager is also responsible for the accurate reporting and presentation of third-party and corporate costs in Simcorp (“SCD”) for AIMCo.

On behalf of AIMCo's clients, the manager is solely responsible for the accurate and complete production of Quarterly Controller’s Reports that are used by all AIMCo Clients as a scorecard of our cost effectiveness that is ultimately reported in each Clients’ respective Financial Statements. As a cost expert, he/she will lead AIMCo’s annual Cost Effective Management (“CEM”) Benchmarking project and coordinate with the Performance, Data and Front Office teams. The manager has two direct reports that require mentorship, feedback, and guidance to operate at their full potential.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Setting up, compiling, reviewing and reporting all third-party investment costs currently incurred by AIMCo in accordance with AIMCo’s Investment Management Cost Policy. These costs are captured, analyzed and reported in AIMCo’s Financial Statements.
  • Providing expertise in all matters related to investment management costs AIMCo incurs for hiring external managers and how to record these fees in SCD and ultimately report them to stakeholders.
  • Creating quarterly external investment fees reports for each asset class. These reports will highlight the cost and trends incurred by each asset class in the prior quarters and will be circulated to the portfolio managers. This involves setting up and maintaining strong relationships with the groups responsible for the entry of these costs.
  • Being the key subject matter expert on all investment pools and the costs that are associated with each of them.
  • Providing expertise regarding AIMCo’s Cost Allocation Policy and being responsible for ensuring AIMCo corporate expenses are allocated fairly and equitable to over 120 investment pools AIMCo manages. Will develop models to calculate and allocate these corporate expenses to these investment pools to ensure equity among the asset classes and to AIMCo Clients at large.
  • Leading the annual budgeting of third-party costs. Liaising with the portfolio managers of the various asset classes to develop a tight annual budget for the CFO to present to the Board for approval.
  • Coordinating and leading the CEM Benchmarking project. Collaborating with the portfolio managers, the Performance and Data teams to compile and submit AIMCo’s data to CEM for the production of the annual CEM Benchmarking report. This reports compare AIMCo as a whole and some balanced pension clients to respective peer groups in terms of cost, return, value add and risk.
  • Acting as the key point of contact for the Client Relations Department on AIMCo costs and variances as it relates to third-party investment costs and CEM benchmarking.
  • Leading the annual Office of the Auditor General of Alberta’s (OAG) audit of all investment expenses reported in the AIMCo Financial Statements and Controller’s Reports.
  • Supervising the calculations and invoicing of external fees for Public Equities and Fixed Income managers and ensures external fees charged and reported by Hedge Fund managers are accurate and complete and in accordance with Public Sector Accounting Standards.
  • Providing leadership and mentoring to Investment Cost Accounting team in managing day to day investment cost recording.
  • Ensuring all deadlines are met so that we deliver on tight Treasury Board and Finance quarter-end deadlines.
Our Ideal Candidate
  • Holds a business, accounting or related degree.
  • Holds a professional CPA designation, with at least 5 years of post-designation experience.
  • Has 3-5 years of management experience.
  • Experience in the investment industry.
  • Is experienced with Simcorp Dimensions or other investment management software.
  • Is an Excel expert and familiar with advanced formulas (INDEX, IF, OFFSET, VLOOKUP, etc.).
  • Has knowledge of cost accounting and reporting. Can combine data from multiple sources (Excel, Simcorp, SQL, etc.) and produce meaningful reports using various tools such as PowerBI.
  • Is able to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
  • Is able to lead a team in a professional and independent manner.
