Position Summary

The Associate Portfolio Manager, Private Placements will assist the Director, Private Placements in AIMCo's Toronto office in the origination and evaluation of private placement investments and the management of a designated portfolio of loans. This role will be accountable for all aspects of the transaction, including managing the deal process.  The objective of the role is to: maximize AIMCo client value-add through investment activity and proactive risk management; act as an external representative, interfacing with investment dealers and market intermediaries to generate investment opportunities; and expand AIMCo’s market presence. The incumbent will have approximately 7-9 years of experience, including acting in an Associate Portfolio Manager role within a life company or financial institution. The position is well suited to an investment professional with a track record of performance, expanding market contacts and the potential for advancement. The Associate Portfolio Manager must also have very strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills to articulate ideas, issues and recommendations internally, as well as with external parties such as investment partners, investment bankers, lawyers, consultants, and senior management of companies. The successful incumbent will also assist the Director in executing new implementation strategies and processes, as well as completing other projects as required.

Key Accountabilities:

Using experience gained across a range of industry sectors, structures and transactions, the Associate Portfolio Manager will evaluate potential investment opportunities, recommend quality transactions to the director for on-ward approval, execute transactions and manage the holdings through to maturity. The Associate Portfolio Manager will play an active role in identifying target investment sectors, generating deal flow and developing relationships. Travel is required to support these activities.


Responsibilities will include:


  • Developing and maintaining a network of professional relationships within the broker and private placement community; Leveraging these relationships to generate quality private placement investment transactions.
  • Playing a leading role in the due diligence of investment opportunities, including managing the overall evaluation process.
  • Playing a leading role in the negotiation and execution of transaction documentation; Working with AIMCo partners in Legal, Tax and Back Office with respect to closing and managing investments.
  • Managing external advisors in the preparation of due diligence reports to evaluate transaction risk.
  • Identifying business and transaction risks and the means to mitigate them.
  • Overseeing the development of sophisticated financial models to analyze investment opportunities.
  • Making investment recommendations and participating in the presentation to investment committees.
  • Managing the drafting of presentations, reports and investment recommendations for presentation to the Director Private Placements and EVP Fixed Income or other senior management.
  • Monitoring Issuer financial covenant performance against required covenants and highlighting variations. Bringing forward issues / trends which may impact the credit profile or value of the investment.
  • Ensuring annual reviews on designated accounts are completed in a timely manner and ensuring internal ratings reflect the current credit profile of each investment.
  • Acting ethically at all times to ensure transactions and procedures are compliant with any and all industry and company policies.
  • Travelling in support of job responsibilities.
Our Ideal Candidate
  • Bachelor’s university degree in Finance or Accounting, supplemented with a graduate degree (MBA) with high academic standing is preferred.
  • Professional designation such as CPA or CFA is desirable.
  • Highly motivated team player who works collaboratively and enjoys the challenges of a transactional environment, can manage multiple projects and thrives on executing within the private placement marketplace.
  • Strong marketing and relationship management skills.
  • Excellent analytical and technical skills (e.g. read and interpret financial statements to direct completion of fundamental credit analysis).
  • Can identify business weaknesses flagged in financial statements, evaluate weaknesses, and can lead a discussion on how key strengths weaknesses and trends are reflected in financial statements.
  • Experience leading material aspects of the investment process, including conducting due diligence, arranging debt financing and negotiating documentation.
  • Knowledge of a range of private placement investment structures, industry sectors, covenants and legal documentation.
  • Excellent written and strong communication skills resulting in effective credit memorandums and presentations.
  • Professional attitude and ability to foster good working relations with co-workers and all business units.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and sound business judgment.
  • Mature perspective, motivated and able to take initiative to see work through to completion; Driven to deliver high quality work versus just an acceptable standard of work.
  • Good attention to detail and presentation of information.
  • English required; bilingualism an asset.
