Position Summary

AIMCo is currently seeking a Vice President, Product Risk Management to join the Risk Management team in Edmonton, Alberta.


Reporting directly to the Chief Risk Officer, the position leads the Product Risk Management department (currently 7 FTE) with the goal of helping AIMCo’s portfolio managers identify, understand and optimally manage risks by designing, implementing and maintaining world-class risk management processes for all of AIMCo’s investment products in all asset classes. Both investment and non-investment risks are in scope. Key to success will be to develop successful partnerships with AIMCo’s portfolio managers.


Specific accountabilities include:


  • Developing, implementing and maintaining a framework for identifying, analyzing, assessing, monitoring and reporting on investment and non-investment risks and risk-adjusted returns in all asset classes;
  • Overseeing and directing the preparation of risk management advice on product and strategy design (universe, benchmark, risk thresholds);
  • Overseeing and directing the identification and assessment of risks of new instrument types and strategies to be used in products;
  • Overseeing and directing the identification and assessment of risks associated with large, illiquid investments and the appointment of external managers and counterparties within product mandates;
  • Overseeing and directing the review, consultation, and feedback on specifications for risk models;
  • Overseeing the design, implementation and production of regular product risk reports;
  • Overseeing and directing product risk managers to ensure PM’s receive effective support;
  • Organizing, directing, managing, coaching and developing the product risk management team;
  • Contributing actively to the overall direction and leadership of the Risk Management function;
  • Contributing actively to the development of AIMCo’s risk management framework as a member of the Risk Methodology Committee;
  • Stimulating the development of a culture of risk awareness and personal responsibility;
  • Actively participating as a member of the Investment Risk Committee and the Tactical Risk Allocation Committee;
  • Based on business requirements, candidate may be asked to participate as a member of the Management Investment Committee, Liquidity Management Committee, and/or the Derivatives Management Committee (to be confirmed).

Compensation Details:

  • Annual Salary: $200,000 - $215,000
  • Eligible for Short and Long Term Incentive
  • Active Living Allowance: $500.00 per year
  • Skills Development and Educational Assistance Grant: $5,000 per year

Terms of Employment:

  • Position is permanent full-time
  • Not eligible for overtime

Our Ideal Candidate

Candidates should be senior Risk professionals with at least 10-15 years of relevant experience in the function. Whereas we do not expect candidates to have in-depth expertise in all areas of Risk, they must have a solid grounding in both illiquid and liquid asset classes and be reasonably familiar with the dimensions of risk management. Candidates with experience within Asset Management organizations is preferred. Candidates should be graduates, and a post graduate degree or other professional qualification would be beneficial. They should have a solid technical grounding in an analytical discipline (Economics, Accounting, Finance), and a firm understanding of regulatory matters. The successful candidate will be an individual who demonstrates an appreciation of the macro/strategic dimensions of risk management, while at the same time, is a “hands on” operator able to play an active role in the implementation and execution of the risk function. Candidates will need to be energetic self-starters, motivated by the challenge of helping to build an organisation, and not be dependent upon a large support staff to get things done.


Qualifications inlcude:


  • At least 10-15 years’ experience in investment risk management, ideally gained on the buy-side, whether as a portfolio manager or a risk manager;
  • A post graduate degree in a relevant discipline;
  • A relevant professional designation (e.g. CFA, FRM) Extensive experience in developing, analyzing and/or evaluating investment strategies in a broad range of asset classes;
  • Demonstrable ability to build effective partnerships with decision-makers (e.g. portfolio managers), while and maintaining independence and providing challenge where appropriate.
  • Expert knowledge of risk identification, assessment, modelling and analysis.
  • Advanced understanding of financial mathematics and statistics.
